If you receive one of the following errors when attempting to email:
- QuickBooks was unable to find your default mail provider in the Windows Registry. Your form will not be emailed
- An internal error occurred while preparing your message. It has not been sent. (MAPI error code 00000000 (0) at line 464 in sendemail.cpp)
follow these steps:
- From the Edit menu, select Preferences…
- From the Online icon, click the Company Preferences tab
- Tick Display each email when sending more than one and click OK
- Close QuickBooks
- From the Windows Start menu, select Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set your default programs
- Select Windows Live Mail in the Programs table
- Click on Set this program as default
- Click OK
- From the Start menu type regedit in the Start search field
- Click regedit.exe in the Programs list
- Locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Clients > Mail (The data field will now be called Windows Live Mail)
- Now locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Clients > Mail. The data file does not automatically update, so you will be required to manually modify it
- Double click on the (Default) string to edit it and replace the text with Windows Live Mail
- Click OK and Close the Registry window
- Open QuickBooks and send an email
Note: This has been tested on Windows 7 using Windows Live Mail on a 32-bit platform.

This fix also works on Win 7 64-bit edition and with Mozilla Thunderbird. Just replace Windows Mail with Mozilla Thunderbird.

I had to use Set program access and computer defaults, then custom and then set windows live mail as default.
I did this after changing the registry in point 11, but the fix did not work above for me. The set default programs does not work properly in w7.

I tried to follow your steps but when it came to the step type regedit in the Start search field it does not find it? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Rebecca, thank you for your query – it sounds like you need a computer guy, or get Reckon Tech support to walk through other checks. There are so many variables with different systems! Not easy to guess without looking at the computer and i sometimes need to just call Reckon! Or my computer guy – do you know someone? You could call Reckon 1300 784 253 or Adam at Cybertribe Computers in Bentleigh VIC 03 9579 5592. Hope that helps!

Another Plus one from me. Just an FYI, make sure you are an admin when editing the registry, or this area is blocked. Wonder why Quickbooks couldn’t “down-scale” and look in the CurrentUsers entry if the LocalMachine entry is empty!?
As each year passes it gets harder to get these old apps running on new computers and OSs, but experience and sites like yours, will continue to help 🙂
